Assessment:

Assessment:

Newsworld II

Are there any prominent symbols in this story that you read?
In the short story it talks about 9/11 and how all of the boys felt after it happened and what they talked about in school after the devastating news, the narrator telling the readers how angry the adults were what they said and how empty every business was. Many of the boys worked at an amusement park called Newsworld and it was described as always busy and full with crowds of people and after the 9/11 attack all those crowds of people were gone and the city was quiet and felt empty.

What connections did you make with this story?
I felt connected because every year on that date we still talk about it and people get angry and mad and in Newsworld the narrator describes the feeling as just that.

What changes would you make to adapt this story to a different medium?
I felt like the descriptions that were told and the emotions were very personal but yet everyone feels that was on 9/11. I think that Newsworld could be turned into a short documentary of the narrator talking and then the camera flashing back to when to happened and footage from the class room the kids sat in and listened to the teacher and then the emotions they all had when learning about what happened.

What medium would you choose?
I would choose to make this into a documentary.

What changes  would you make?
I would not make any drastic changes to this story because it is nicely written and extremely thought out and detailed with thoughts and emotions.

Curate Yourself:

Curate Yourself:

Why is this text important to you?

I chose to curate The Hunger Games, this text/film is not necessarily important to me but it does have many great symbols throughout the text and film. Inequality vs. rich and poor. This is important because in today's society we still have rich vs. poor and it interesting to see how this plays out in the movie between all the districts and how the poorest district had the strongest survivor in all of the games. In Katniss’s District, District 12 many families and individuals would have to hunt for their food and beg just for a small piece of bread and most of them would die of starvation.
Also the importance of appearances and how Katniss dressed while in district 12 then when she became basically the face of the Hunger Games her wardrobe began to grow into a strong, independent girl who was very brave and showed no fear to the other players in the game.
How the crowds of people that would watch The Hunger Games got entertainment out of watching the players suffer and die.

Why should more people come to know this work?

I believe most people know of The Hunger Games, they have either watched the movies or read the books or both. I know on the syllabus we were supposed to have a week about The Hunger Games but we never did and I think this film and text are both very intense and interesting to learn further about.

Reading the Multimodal Narrative-

Asterios Polyp

Asterios Polyp is a 2009 graphic novel written and illustrated by American Cartoonist David Mazzucchelli. In this graphic novel Asterios Polyp, is about the main character Polyp and his new life. He was a professor and architect who taught at Cornell University until lightning struck his New York apartment and burnt down. Polyp decided to take what was left and travel on a bus looking for a new life. He traveled on a bus as far as his money would take him, to a new town, Apogee where he becomes an auto mechanic. The graphic novel has scenes from his past life of his troubling marriage all of the way to his childhood. The novel is narrated by Polyp's twin brother Ignazio. The graphic novel also talks about Polyp's dreams he has or has had when he was younger. The plot of the graphic novel, structure and design has a contrast quality about it. It contrasts reason vs. emotion, destiny vs. free will and who Polyp really is.

Dream-

Make a dream into a movie:
We dream every night even if you do not remember it every body still dreams. I had a dream when I was a little girl probably around the age of nine that I always remember for some reason and it has stuck with me since then. This dream is not horribly frightening by any means but it scared me when I was little. My dream was that I got trapped in a dark building all by myself and could not get out. I remember in the dream that I was panicking and pacing in this dark building and pacing up and down this huge, tall, long hallway. I remember in the dream after pacing, theses five gallon water bottles began to fall from the top shelf and I could not get away from them all falling on me. I really do not remember much after that and like I said when I was little this dream was a nightmare but now I think about it and it does not really make any sense nor sound that scary anymore. I know I remember I had this dream again a few years back when I was really ill. I woke up scared again from this dream again but I have not had it recently.

About three days ago I had a dream and I woke up from it at about four in the morning and did not know if it actually happened in real life or not.

When I went outside I observed a lot in the thirty minutes that we were given. I walked over to the bayou to observe the water, people painting, the breeze, the sun,  the palm trees, bugs, the fishes jumping out of the water, cars and everything else that was present during that time. It was very relaxing  and I enjoyed the experience.

McLuhan and Media Future-

I decided to chose this  picture of Donald Trump because this picture depicts him very well with his finger up in the air and him ranting and yelling to the audience about some nonsense. I personally do not agree with anything that Donald Trump has to say but I also do not follow politics but when people my age say they do not follow politics I think it is because their parents do not really follow them and they just copy what their parents think or follow their outlook on politics. I also think some people are for Trump because they think he will make America rich. Yes Trump is very rich and worth between $4.5 and $10 billion but is that really why America wants him because Trump has gone bankrupt four times and who knows how many other times he will file for bankruptcy. Then why do people think he will be a good asset for the economy. He also wants to build a wall between Mexico and the Untied States and kick 11 million undocumented immigrates out of the country. How will this make America great again? I do not believe Donald Trump would be a good President of The United States because he would most likely bring us to war and ruin this country and the United States would defiantly not be great it would just go down hill if he were president. This image also expresses a positive and negative outtake because of Donald Trumps finger up in the air.

Voice & The Auteur Theory-

Wes Anderson-

I chose to watch three films by Wes Anderson. Anderson is an American film director, film producer, screen writer and actor. All of Anderson films are known to be visually capturing by the use of their distinctive visual and his narrative styles he uses in each of his films. Anderson chooses to direct fast paced comedies that can be serious and fun. Often themes that can be found in his work are a loss of innocence, grief, singling rivalry, and friendships. Anderson is noted for being unusually character driven and often has thefts and disappearances in his films. He has a very uncommon visual style, as well as a limited color pallet and odd camera positions. In all of his films he gives each  one a distinctive quality that is different from any other films. Anderson is often a character in his own films that he writes, produces and directs. I chose to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and She's Funny That Way.

Adaption-

Much Ado About Nothing-

Much Ado About Nothing is a screen play written by William Shakespeare. The screen play is based in the sixteenth century England. It is written about the ideal of social grace, public shaming, and the loss of honor. If I were the costume designer for Much Ado About Nothing I would chose to dress one of the main characters, Hero in white modern chic bohemian inspired clothing throughout the movie. Since the screenplay is based in the sixteenth century and if I were the director of the movie I would chose to base it in present day. Hero is the daughter of Leonato, Hero is innocent and kind. I would dress her in long maxi white dress for many of the scenes. I would chose to dress her in all white because white is pure, innocent, the start of new beginnings /the since of starting over, the color white reflects perfection. Free People is a clothing brand that is one of my personal favorites and I think that  it would fit in perfectly for the character of Hero. Below are two dresses that I would pick.

Virtual Reality:

Ready Player One:

While reading Ready Player One written by Ernest Cline I was very intrigued with the storyline because it was very interesting. Virtual reality is beginning to become bigger lately in video games and players are beginning to be involved with the actual game and how they play inside of the actual game as a character in it. Ready Player One  is obviously about virtual reality, a quest about battling giant Japanese robots, based in the year 2044, and part of a love story. Ready Player One  is an adventure and many people and players begin to really get involved in the virtual world inside the game known as the virtual reality that takes place in Ready Player One. In my opinion I would probably never play a virtual reality game, yes I find it interesting but also kind of scary how you are actually part of the game and you are not necessarily playing on the outside but considered playing on the inside. Ready Player One is a science fiction thriller where the United States is a depressed place and people want to escape and do something else with their days. This is why they escape to virtual reality and players get extremely involved.

Alternate: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Alternity:
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

While watching this play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead written by Tom Stoppard I was very confused while watching it.  This play is also based off of Hamlet and I think the point of this play was to have a confusing story line because from the beginning both Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were flipping a coin and then they would argue and that is were the confusion began just from the very start of the play. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead show events from Hamlet with the point of view from two minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildestern. Both characters can not control their destiny in this play and that is were the storyline becomes more confusing especially as the story continues on. Both characters walk through the Elsinore Castle and then meet up with Hamlet and visit with him and this is where the events occur from Hamlet. Rosencrantz and Guildestern both can not control the events that take place and their destiny is uncontrollable at this point and through out the whole story. Like in the story of Hamlet  they are dead and both are basically finished books. Neither Rosencrantz nor Guildestern have any more chances and dead is different from being alive, they both re-live what they have already experienced through out both of their lives.

Hitting Budapest

Hitting Budapest  is a short fiction story about traveling to Budapest. The village that Bastard, Chipo, Godknows, Sbho, Stina and the narrator of the story lives in is very poor. This is why they are all traveling to Budapest even though they are not allowed to and have other tasks to do. This group of six children are hungry and on a mission to get guavas because they are all so hungry. In class we also watched a movie that was similar in a way compared to Hitting Budapest because of the characters that were in both the movie and the story. The movie was about a group of six boys that did not do very good things like rob an innocent girl. What are the guiding beliefs for Hitting Budapest? I believe that these characters in this story want something more than what they already have in their town that is why they are going and traveling to Budapest. They want their lives to be better and they believe that they will also own a nice house in Budapest one day. The boys in the movie are depicted as being bad and also being in a gang but when you actually start to get more into the movie you figure out that they are not as bad as they seem to be made out as.

The Girl:

The Girl is a short story about a girl who has very strict rules and guidelines to follow that her family has given her. How do I relate to this short story? I honestly do not really relate to this story because I grew up with not very strict parents at all. When I was eight years old my mother passed away and from then on my father and sister raised me as well as other family that moved to help with the death of my mother. My father never gave me strict rules to follow like the rules in the short story that were given to the girl. Maybe because he knew I would never break them or go against what he told me. The Girl comes from a different heritage as well so that may play a factor in why her parents are so strict and against certain actions that she does or could do as she grows older. How about the relationship between men and woman? In the short story there were still conflicts between men and woman because the girl could not do this.. and that.. While talking about conflicts between the relationship in each gender, gender laws appear as well as men getting paid more in the work place even though a woman can do that same job and might even do it better. Then talking about that, feminism takes part and becomes a strong topic for people to talk about.

The Grand Budapest Hotel-

The Grand Budapest Hotel was a very interesting and eye catching film to watch. The colors are very bright throughout the whole film, with many intriguing shots from Director Wes Anderson; which puts a new and different spin on the movie. With all of the interesting shots that Wes Anderson adds are very fascinating to viewers and also very different from other movies that i have watched in the past. I believe one of the most impressive details that Anderson adds into the The Grand Budapest Hotel would most likely be the bright colors. The bright colors throughout this film are brought into shots and it adds a new dimension to the film and changes the emotion of the shot rather than it just being a boring simple color. The pop of color manipulates the viewers sense of emotion and adds so much more in my opinion. With the pop of the color red in The Grand Budapest Hotel it adds a warm feeling to the film. Red gives off a "warm" color temperature and by doing this it evokes a tension maybe between characters or the setting. While watching films now and noticing that simple pop of color will change the feeling that many people get while watching a film and give a new out look on a film itself. I really did enjoy watching this film and would highly recommend it to friends. I also like how I can now tell what the director is doing by the kind of shot they take or by the sense of color that is being expressed.

True Grit

True Grit written by Charles McColl Portsis is an extremely interesting novel that has courage, love, revenge and trust. Mattie Ross is a fourteen year old girl that begins an adventure to avenge her father’s death. Mattie is determined to find the man that murdered her father. This story is told on Mattie Ross’s behalf. True Grit is considered to be a western considering the genre of the story. I believe it is a western drama because it does have action, great friendships between characters, guns, horseback, revenge that involves characters getting hung and killed by guns, the landscape/ frontier. There are many conflicts that are shown throughout this story as well as plenty of humor through Mattie’s dialogue. This story is set in in native Arkansas that argues values while the story has two major themes throughout the story. Justice plays a big part in True grit because Mattie sets out at the age of fourteen on horseback to avenge her fathers death. Another factor that is told through Charles Portsis’s True Grit is revenge. Revenge is a huge factor because that is what the who novel is based around and the adventure that Mattie has to overcome for revenge. When reading and watching a western the audience wants to see gun fights and show downs, a western is also supported from the values of the novel, the culture that is being told by the story, the frontier landscape, and indians vs. cowboys. I enjoyed reading and watching True Grit because of Mattie’s dedication and how well she bargains and does not take no for an answer while in the middle of a bargain or an argument. Mattie was determined to tag along even though she is fourteen and a girl. In the novel every character had their own sense of “true grit” which is told by the title.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen is a love story that is beloved by many. The story is truly unique in numerous ways and love plays a huge factor in this novel. For example how the Bennet daughters are so eager to find true love and have a man to protect them and always be by there side. I believe that plenty of woman these days can relate to what Elizabeth was going through and how she did have some trust issues with Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy’s first impression was a little snobby and came off rude but then when he got to know Elizabeth he then began to fall in love with her and knew she was the one for him. Elizabeth’s personality is smart, witty, intelligent and sarcastic and out of all of the Bennet daughters Elizabeth is my favorite character. I also think that Elizabeth’s personality does catch other characters off guard and that is what I enjoy about her character. I was confused about Elizabeth’s first decision to decline to Mr. Darcy’s hand in marriage the first time he asked because he clearly was in love with Elizabeth and the readers could tell that she was to but something just felt a little off to Elizabeth. The eldest daughter Jane was clearly in love with Mr. Bennet and he was also in love with Jane. Many of the characters loved Jane because she was the prettiest of all the sisters. She also had her ups and downs with Mr. Bennet and then they soon came to realization that they were in love with one another. I really did enjoy the story and the outcome of Pride and Prejudice.

Origin-

Zoey Laderer

I am from Charlotte, NC. I was raised by a very artistic family, both of my parents met and graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in the early 80's. My father majored in graphic design and my mother majored in fine arts. Each loving their professions and collaborating on different projects they would get in their work field. My sister was born in 1988 and graduated from The Art Institute of Charlotte, she majored in fashion marketing. My sister and I are nine years apart, I was born in 1996 and I have always had a love for the arts ever since I was a child. At an early age I decided to transfer to a performing arts middle/ high school. I attended Northwest School of the Arts for five years this is where I began the great journey that led me to Ringling College of Art and Design.

Who was I influenced by?
My Mother, Janette influenced me to pursue art. I had a very strange child hood because my mother died when I was eight years old. I watched my mother create art and beautiful mosaics everyday and she is the reason I began to draw, paint and sculpt. If not for watching her create when I was a child I would not be here and pursing my talent today.

What is my ideology?
I view the world like my Family taught me, I believe that everybody has good in them. I do not take things for granite and I believe other people should not either.
